Allen Charles Washburn passed away on May 25th at the age of 63. Allen was born October 16, 1961 at the US Army Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany, the fourth child of Pamela (Harding) Washburn and Charles Thomas Washburn.
While living at Fort Lewis, Washington, doctors discovered Allen had been born with a serious kidney defect. At the time, Allen's parents were told that he might have a very short life. But with medical intervention and increasing medical knowledge Allen exceeded expectations, first living long past what doctors had originally projected, then avoiding dialysis almost 20 years beyond predictions.
As a young member of a military family Allen was able to travel to Germany, England, Switzerland, and France as well as Idaho and Texas and through many states throughout the US. While growing up in Killeen, Allen spent numerous weekends hunting or fishing with family members. He also played many sports and excelled at almost any sport he tried but as he grew older, he loved more and more just to be outdoors exploring. He was always excited to travel anywhere new, especially the wide open spaces of Big Bend National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, Yellowstone National Park, parts of Alaska and lots of places in between. His love of the outdoors may have steered him into his career with the City of Killeen as a Groundskeeper and eventually Golf Course Maintenance Supervisor before moving to Killeen Parks and Recreation. He retired in 2009 after just over 20 years service. During his time with the City of Killeen, Allen met Malcolm Thompson III. Malcolm and Allen considered themselves ‘brothers from another mother’ and remained best friends until Malcolm’s death in 2022. Malcolm and his wife Diane were Allen's favorite hiking partners for many years. Allen also fondly remembered and enjoyed seeing his colleagues from the City of Killeen.
In early 2021 due to increasing memory and health issues, Allen became a member of the community at Regency Manor in Temple. While he wasn’t initially happy about the move, with time he became more settled. He had many people there who genuinely cared about him and his welfare.
Allen was predeceased by Malcolm, his niece Caroline Wright and his parents. He is survived by siblings Barbara Wright (spouse Bobby Wright), Wendy Gaffney, Denise Rasta, and Rick Washburn (spouse Phyllis Washburn), his beloved nieces and nephews Chad Gaffney, Sara Wright, Stacie Gaffney-Campbell (spouse Nathan), George Avery IV (spouse Rene), Matthew Rasta (spouse Alicia), Kenneth Rasta (spouse Leyna), Casey Washburn, Emily Powers (spouse Aaron), and Sadie Morris (spouse Jeromy) As well as great nieces and great nephews, Reece Floyd, Mitchell Floyd, Zane Trusky , Zachary Avery, Kinsley Rasta, Eilis Campbell, Mia Morris, Violet Powers, and Owen Powers.
And special thanks to Allen’s long term neighbors the Fenton family and especially Gene Fenton for caring for Al when we were not there.
