Command Sergeant Major David Lee Null. U.S. Army (Retired) August 20, 1966-October 15, 2026

Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the LORD is with him.” 1 Samuel 16:18

“A life well-lived is the most exquisite work of art.”

David Lee Null, a cherished father and husband of immeasurable love and unwavering faith, was granted eternal rest on October 15, 2026. Born on August 20, 1966, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to the late Ronald and Margaret Null, David was a retired American soldier, a devoted husband, and a proud father. David was an active force of encouragement, character and accountability for his family and so many others who knew him. He will be mourned, and he will be missed. Above all, he will be celebrated in the minds and hearts of those who received the radio signals of love that he shared unconditionally.

“True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.”

Choosing to embark on a road of service to his country, Dave’s actions and heart were forged with duty, honor, and an unwavering commitment to his family and his country. Dave enlisted in the United States Army on January 8, 1985. His distinguished military career, which spanned more than 24 years, included tours to Afghanistan and Iraq. Upon retiring as a Command Sergeant Major in June 2009, Dave had built a foundation that displayed a legacy of impactful service to his fellow soldiers and country.

Dave was always the man, never a myth, and forever a legend. He was a walking portrait of a man’s love for his family. His dedication and commitment to being a present husband and father was a sum of love, support, admiration, and strength that he chose to convey. On July 24, 1993, Dave married the love of his life, Tammy. For Tammy, Dave was her forever sunshine and partner in stewardship. For 33 years, he was the light that came into her life showering rays of love-unconditional, knowledge-unabridged, laughter-unrestrained, and support-unparalleled. Their love and partnership produced three children, Kurtis, Amie (preceded in death) and Kaitlyn. As a parent, Dave always understood the assignment. He was the chauffeuring, band booster-ing; drive across Texas to save the day, providing comic relief, type of dad.

“Knowledge is only power if it’s shared.”

Dave was a true renaissance man. He possessed a level of curiosity that pushed him to excel in everything he attempted. Dave was a man who understood that it was important to not just exceed existing standards, but to set new ones as well. He consistently raised the bar in both his personal and professional life. A man of a million talents and interests, Dave’s interests ranged from motorcycles to music; from radio to recreation; from movies to his embraced role as a full-time comedian (for which he thought was his day job). He found joy in the time he spent with Agape Hood, the Ham Radio Community, and the Bell County Crime Stoppers.

After retirement, Dave’s reach extended to others around the globe. He created a YouTube channel that, to his own amazement, received viewership and comments from enthusiasts in other countries. It was indeed a testament of “if you build it, they will come.” His knowledge was not limited to what he knew, because his inquisitive nature would not allow him to simply see without having an understanding of what he was witnessing or hearing. Dave was never satisfied with gaining that knowledge or understanding. He willingly shared it with those around him. He was an educator and the world became his classroom. In one way, or another, we were all students of Professor Dave.

“The measure of a life is not its duration but its donation.”

Dave’s memory stands as a testament to selfless service, courage, and devotion. Unlike the sun, the rays of beauty and light that Dave gave so gracefully and effortlessly will never be dim or set. To pay forward the love he gave to those he held dear to her heart, and celebrate his memory, David Lee Null leaves his wife, Tammy; son, Kurtis (Jocelyn); daughter, Kaitlyn; granddaughter, Darcy; grandson, Harrison; brother, Mark Null (Bailley); and sister, Kris King (Jason). In addition, Dave leaves behind a community of friends, soldiers and colleagues whose lives he impacted throughout the years.

Though his earthly transmitter is quiet, all static has ceased, his signal remains strong, and his love continues to echo in the heart-waves of the many friends, former colleagues whose lives he touched and molded. His station may be quiet, but for those who loved David Lee Null, W5CSM, will never sign off.

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 8:38-39 (KJV)

Acknowledgements

Tammy, Kurtis, and Kaitlyn would like to acknowledge the support and kindness that has given them much needed comfort. Dave’s family understands that during such times, words do not often come easy. Please know that the words of your hearts are heard and felt. Know that at times when Tammy’s own words are few, her sentiments are an abundance of gratitude for the love that has been poured into Dave’s family. It is the hope of Dave’s family that your hearts remain open to receive the signals of faith and joy that still resonate from this beloved husband, father, and grandpa.
