Heike Ontiveros (née Spanholtz) passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on July 30, 2026, in Temple, Texas, at the age of 80. Born on July 25, 1946, in Göttingen, Germany, Heike lived a full and vibrant life, marked by love for her family, an enduring curiosity about the world, and a welcoming spirit that touched all who knew her.

Heike’s journey began in postwar Germany, where she grew up in a family that valued connection and learning. She was the cherished daughter of Walter and Liselotte Spanholtz, both of whom preceded her in death, as did her beloved brothers, Thomas and Rüdiger Spanholtz. 

A talented language instructor, Heike devoted her career to inspiring others and bridging cultures. Her passion for teaching was matched only by her love of travel; she delighted in exploring the rich tapestry of Europe, discovering new cities and sharing stories of her adventures. Heike’s heart was deeply tied to the landscapes she visited, yet she found special beauty at home in Texas, especially taking in the warmth of the Texas sun. The calming warmth was among her favorites, always bringing a smile to her face.

Heike was an avid reader, endlessly curious and always eager to immerse herself in a good book. She had an innate ability to connect with others, welcoming friends and family into her home and making everyone feel like they belonged. Her family remembers her as a loving and caring presence—an anchor through life’s many milestones and challenges. She leaves behind a legacy of affection, and warmth, offering generously of her wisdom and time.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Nicholas Ontiveros, with whom she shared a true partnership filled with love. Together, they raised three children: Tom Ontiveros and his wife, Sandra; Tina Young and her husband, Lloyd; and Tania Lamy and her husband, Kile. Heike’s pride in her children was immeasurable, and she rejoiced in the successes and joys of their lives.

Her grandchildren—Kiley Lamy, Morgan Charo, Reagan Lamy, and Alee Ontiveros—brought her boundless joy, each one a testament to the love she imparted. Heike was also blessed to welcome her great-grandson, Makai Charo, into the family, delighting in the opportunity to see a new generation begin.

Heike’s memory will live on in all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her embracing spirit, love of conversation, and boundless affection for family and friends alike will be dearly missed but fondly remembered.

At this time, the family takes comfort in recalling her laughter, her stories, and the colorful presence she brought into their lives. May she rest in peace, forever loved and cherished.
