Horst “Butch” Obstoj
September 23, 1943 – October 21, 2026
Horst “Butch” Obstoj, 83, of Harker Heights, Texas, passed away on October 21, 2026.
Butch was born on September 23, 1943, in Beuthen, Germany, to Hildegard and James Minter. He graduated from Würzburg American High School in Germany with the Class of 1962. After high school, he served his country for six years in the United States Navy.
After his military service, Butch earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Central Texas College. He was a store manager at Gibson’s Department Store in Harker Heights for more than ten years before following his dream of opening his own business, Green Leaf Nursery. He owned and ran it for over 30 years, and many in the community knew him for his hard work and friendly service. He later retired so he could spend more time with his beloved wife and his grandchildren.
Butch loved his family above all. To his grandchildren he was “Opa,” and they were his pride and joy. He loved fishing, trips to the beach and the mountains, and all kinds of sports. He was a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys, the Texas Rangers, and the Texas Longhorns, and he rarely missed a game.
Butch was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Sandra Obstoj; his son, James Obstoj; his sister, Bridgette Elliot; and his parents, Hildegard and James Minter.
He is survived by his son Christopher Obstoj and daughter-in-law Christina; his son Edward Prince; his grandchildren Michael Baugh, Alisha Frost, Hailey Obstoj, and Megan Obstoj; his great-grandson Waylon Baugh; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Brenda and Steve Behringer; his brother-in-law Tommy Merck and his partner, Lynda Clyman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family invites everyone to join them for a Celebration of Life on Friday, November 20, 2026, at 12:30 p.m. at Crotty Funeral Home, 5431 I-14 Frontage Road, Belton, Texas 76513.
Butch will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
