In Loving Memory of Jack Laverne Howell

Jack Laverne Howell, known to many as Jack or Jake, was born on September 12, 1959, in Fort Ord, California, and passed away on September 22, 2026, in Killeen, Texas.

Jack lived a life marked by devotion to his family, hard work, and a warm spirit that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him. He attended Killeen High School and went on to build a meaningful life centered on loyalty, perseverance, and the simple joys that made each day special. He worked in maintenance, where his dependable nature and practical skills were valued by those around him. Jack approached his work with quiet pride and a willingness to help, reflecting the same selfless character he carried into every part of his life.

Above all else, Jack was a family man. He is survived by his children, Crystal Ann Renfrew and her husband, David Allan Renfrew IV; Jack William Howell and his wife, Heather Renee Howell; Haley Marie Hourigan and her husband, Cody James Hourigan; and his daughters, Hannah and Emma. He also leaves behind many beloved grandchildren, including Kaden Alexander Howell, Khloe Alana Renfrew, David Allan Renfrew V, Noah Luke Renfrew, Brynnlee Alexis Howell, Jack William Howell III, Kynslee Grace Howell, and Kalii Brielle Hourigan.

Jack took great joy in being a grandfather, and his grandchildren were among the brightest lights in his life. He cherished the time he spent with them and created countless memories that his family will carry with them forever. Jack is also survived by his siblings, Martine Donna Bykowski; Gilbert Howell; Annette and her husband, Tom Kasten; Denise and her husband, Greg Sullivan; and Cezanna “Sue” and her husband, Mike Malter, along with his surviving aunt, Sue.

His family will remember Jack as loving, funny, and selfless—a man who gave generously of his time, his humor, and his heart. He had a way of making people feel welcome and cared for, and his presence brought comfort and laughter to countless gatherings.

Jack found happiness in the everyday moments that became cherished memories. He was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed drinking coffee, listening to all genres of music, watching movies of all kinds, and spending time with his grandkids. He especially loved playing monster trucks with his little buddy Noah, a pastime that brought out his playful side and created memories they will treasure forever. Jack absolutely loved and adored animals. That love was a special part of who he was and something his family will always remember about him. He really loved the holidays and bringing the family together for food and fun. 

He also enjoyed shooting at the range with his son Jack and collecting pocket knives—interests that reflected his appreciation for skill, precision, and tradition. Jack liked an ice-cold beer and was always willing to try new foods, although nothing compared to a great steak or a juicy burger. Some of his favorite moments were the quiet ones: sitting in the garage watching the rain, listening to music, watching a good movie, or taking the kids down the block on his scooter. These simple pleasures spoke to the easygoing joy he found in life.

Jack will be remembered for the love he gave so freely and the humor that could brighten even the hardest day. His family and friends will carry forward the many stories, lessons, laughs, and memories he left behind.

Though his passing leaves a deep emptiness, his life stands as a reminder of the value of kindness, laughter, family, and steadfast devotion to the people we love. As Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”

Jack Howell lived in a way that made that truth evident to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.
