James Thomas Henager, known affectionately to many as the "Medicine Man," passed away peacefully at his residence on May 26, 2026. Born on March 20, 1952, in Gatesville, Texas, James lived a life marked by deep spirituality, unwavering kindness, and a unique charm that touched everyone he met.

From the moment you saw James, his long silver hair and ever-present cowboy hat set him apart, and many fondly recalled his boots and jeans as his signature attire. A man of many talents and passions, James was a certified welder and spent much of his professional life as a chemical engineer with Halliburton in Oklahoma. Yet, it was his soul, rich with old remedies and heartfelt wisdom, that truly defined him. His belief in the healing power of nature earned him his cherished nickname, as he read stones and cards with gentle insight and compassion.

Beyond his career and spiritual gifts, James was a true lover of music, finding solace and joy in playing the guitar and listening to old country singers. The sound of Bob Seger’s "Turn the Page" was the perfect soundtrack for cruising in his beloved 1968 Nova, a symbol of his free spirit and love for simple pleasures. Those who shared time with James will always remember hours spent drinking coffee in diners, the camaraderie found in poolhalls, and the laughter sparked by the companionship of his loyal dogs, Gage and Rowdy.

James's heart was boundless, especially when it came to children. Though they may not have been his biological offspring, he raised them with the depth of love and commitment befitting a devoted father and a grandfather. He loved them just as fiercely as if they were his own, embodying a gentle, nurturing spirit that will live on in their hearts forever.

He leaves behind his  wife, Cheryl Henager, of Ft. Smith, Arkansas; his son, Mark Burgar, of Temple, Texas; and his daughters, Krystal Everett of Troy, Texas, and Shirley Grigsby of Temple, Texas. He is also survived by his brother, Benny Jasper, of Turnsville, Texas, and sister, Crystal McAdoo, of Lake Whitney, Texas — dear companions who shared in the joys and challenges of life alongside him.

James was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Price Henager and Ruth White; his brother, Glenn Jasper; and sisters, Donna Lemon and Bell Bennett. Their memories live on as the foundation upon which James built his own legacy of love and resilience.

A Celebration of Life to honor James Thomas Henager will be held on Tuesday June 23, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., at the Crotty Funeral Home & Cremation Services, located at 5431 U.S. Hwy 190, Belton, Texas.
