John Floy Housman, a man of courage and strength, passed away on August 25, 2025, at the age of 70 in Temple, Texas, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on October 28, 1954, in Tacoma WA while his father was serving in the military, John's journey was one marked by determination, and courage.
John's athletic talent became evident during his high school years as a standout football player for the Killeen Kangaroos. His prowess on the field earned him a full four-year scholarship to the University of Houston, where he continued to shatter records as a Houston Cougar. His remarkable abilities caught the attention of the professional league, and he went on to play for the Houston Oilers until the NFL expansion.
After his storied football career, John transitioned to a new field, applying the same dedication and work ethic to his career in the oil industry. He became as skilled with an engineering helmet as he had been with a football helmet, ultimately retiring after his illness.John loved God unwavering and He knew that accepting Jesus Christ as His personal Savior was the most important decision of his life.An avid outdoorsman, John loved to hunt and play golf. Even when he could no longer participate in these activities, his passion for sports never waned, and he found joy in watching them on TV.
John loved his family and is survived by his daughter, Haley Newton from Alabama; his son, John Austin Housman from Georgia; and stepson, Adam Dehart also from Georgia, including their families, and his sweet grandchildren.John also leaves behind two loving sisters and their family.Diana Schultz & her husband Richard; from Temple TX, and their 3 children, Richard A. Schultz, Misty Schultz, & Ryanne Byrne, and their 7 lovely children. Kristye Hinds and her husband Jeff; also from Temple and their daughter, Isabella. We would like to thank his cousins, Ricky Powell from Oklahoma and Ralph Brown from Grapeland, TX, as they were immensely helpful during John’s long battle with cancer. John loved hearing about all of the sports highlights, from all of his family, near and far, and he was immensely proud of each of them.
His great nephew, Noah Schultz, gave him great joy as Noah was always sharing his success stories and videos with John. He looked up to his Uncle John and his distinguished football career, as we all did.
John's legacy is one of triumphs and challenges met with a smile and a joke. His intelligence was matched by his wit, and his courage was complemented by his strength . John Floy Housman will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we say goodbye to John, we celebrate a life well-lived, a race well-run, and a rest well-earned.
