Obituary

Our beautiful Katherine Christine Nelson, age 27, of Copperas Cove, Texas, passed away on “Green Day”—St. Patrick’s Day—March 17, 2026. She was born on November 12, 1998, in Temple, Texas. Katie was known for her trademark beautiful red hair and her radiant, fearless smile that could light up any room. She carried a feisty spirit, a big heart, and a fierce compassion for others that left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

From an early age, Katie showed remarkable dedication to her studies and a deep calling toward medicine. She excelled academically and pursued her passion for helping others through her involvement in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), where she proudly served as Vice President for the Copperas Cove High School chapter. Katie’s life was one of purpose, strength, and love. She had a unique ability to make others feel seen, valued, and cared for, and her presence brought comfort and joy to those around her.

She volunteered at numerous blood drives and earned her CNA at age sixteen, beginning her rewarding career in medicine. Her passion was helping people, especially those who were sick. She capably cared for her father, Dan Nelson, during his cancer battle, while simultaneously coping with her own brain tumor, diagnosed in 2024 during his illness. Athletics were a formative part of her life, instilling in her the values of discipline, dedication, persistence and teamwork. From age seven through high school, she spent countless hours at softball fields, traveling throughout Texas and beyond with select teams as a pitcher and an infielder. Her coaches say she was coachable, focused, driven and a great team player. She attended Clarendon College near Amarillo, beginning fall of 2017, on both academic and softball scholarships. Injuries brought her back home to finish her education and pursue her nursing degree. While in nursing school, Katie earned her CMA and worked at Baylor Scott & White clinics in Central Texas in support of the Covid pandemic efforts. In May 2021, Katie graduated with her Associate Degree in Nursing, and began work at BSW Lakeway Hospital in Austin on the Medical-Surgical Unit. She was quickly recognized for her leadership ability, taking on roles as preceptor and mentor, and was soon promoted to Charge Nurse. Katie was respected by peers and supervisors for her keen instinct, critical thinking, and compassion for patients, but also loved for bringing levity to an otherwise intense environment. She was nominated more than once for the prestigious "Daisy Award" by patients, families and peers. This award honors the "superhuman" work nurses do, and is given for having excellent clinical skills and providing compassionate patient care.

Family was everything to Katie and she is lovingly remembered by her mother, Heidi Pefley Nelson and her sisters and best friends, Carlene Anne Nelson (Copperas Cove), Kasandra Kathleen Nelson (Panama City Beach, FL), and her loving boyfriend, Akash Aggarwal (San Francisco, CA). She is also survived by her paternal grandfather, David Nelson (Medford, OR), her maternal grandmother, Penny Pefley (Seattle, WA), a wide circle of aunts, uncles, and cousins, including her cousin, Daniel Butler (Medford, OR) who will play the bagpipes at her Celebration of Life.

Katie's passions included helping others, great food, healthy skincare, and naps with her cat Remi. She was generous and the best gift giver, ever. Even a 6-foot-tall light up musical Nutcracker wasn’t too big of a gift for her to order as a final Christmas gift to her family. Her favorite holiday was Thanksgiving, and happily carried on the tradition of frying a turkey with her sisters, a skill they learned from their Dad. She mastered the art of traveling with a brain tumor and enjoyed many Bucket List trips, most with her boyfriend, Akash Aggarwal. She visited Boston, California, Colorado, Florida, Maine, Missouri, New Orleans, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington, but her favorite of all was Alaska. On the night that she died, beautiful arouras were seen over Fairbanks, Alaska. The pink and green images of angels was a comfort to Katie’s family, especially since she had previously encouraged them to look for signs of her in the night sky. Katie's bright presence and drive to excel in everything she did will long be remembered by all. Please join us in wearing a touch of green (her favorite color) and celebrating her life.

The Nelson family would like to extend a special thanks to Katie's amazing Hospice Care Team: John Hudson, RN, of BSW Hospice; Penny Pefley, RN, Maternal Grandmother, and Lauren Richmond, RN, special family friend.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Katie's memory on her obituary page at www.crottyfh.com to The Cure Starts Now Foundation to support research for DIPGDMG brain cancer. A visitation with refreshments will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Monday, April 13, 2026 followed by her celebration of life at Crotty Funeral Home & Cremation Services located at , 5431 W. U.S. Hwy 190 in Belton followed by a procession to Austin Interment at Remembrance Gardens of Riverbend in Austin.
