Mary Ruth (May) Headrick 8/19/1948 – 4/5/2026
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am at Baden Square Community Center, 700 Gary Street in Winfield Kansas on Saturday, April 11, 2026. A private family burial will take place at the Atlanta (KS) Cemetery at a later time.
Mary Ruth Headrick, 77, slipped peacefully into eternity on April 5, 2026, holding the hand of Kermit, her sweetheart of 58 years. Mary, formerly of Atlanta, Kansas resided at Cornerstone Gardens in Temple, Texas. She was born a preemie, in Winfield, Kansas on August 19, 1948, to Glenn and Mabel (Lambotte) May. She spent her youth in Atlanta, where she graduated as valedictorian from Atlanta High School. On February 9, 1968, she married the love of her life, Kermit Headrick. They spent the first six months of their married life working on a farm in Cole Camp, Missouri before moving to their family farm on the county line north of Atlanta. Three daughters, Karen, Sharon and LaGaya were born to this union. In 1978 they adopted sons, Michael and James.
Mary was known for her cheerful disposition and loved people. Her kindness and attentiveness made others feel cared for and comfortable. She was devoted to her faith and found help from reading the Bible and her relationship with God. For many years, she helped her husband with farming: driving tractors, working with livestock or taking truckloads of wheat to the Coop. She raised a large garden and sold produce, flowers, and baked goods at local farmers’ markets. She enjoyed baking, canning, sewing and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She spent many evenings playing and singing with her daughters around the piano. She was a skilled pianist and played the accordion. After most of her children were raised, Mary began working at the ASCS office in Winfield, Kansas and then for Graves Drug Company in Winfield and El Dorado. In 2008, Mary and Kermit moved to rural Augusta, Kansas where she worked at ACE Hardware and was semi-retired. With failing health, Mary and Kermit moved to Temple, Texas in 2021 to be near their daughter, Karen.
Mary is survived by husband Kermit of Temple, son James, and daughters Karen (Doug) Dotson of Temple, TX, Sharon (Allan) Sudduth of Enid, OK, and LaGaya (Keith) Belling of Granger, IA. She is also survived by her grandchildren Michaela (Horacio) Sosa, Andrea (Sean) Shannon, Jonathan Dotson, Chelsea Sudduth, William Sudduth, Dakota Belling, Elizabeth (Ethan) Krigbaum as well as six great grandchildren and her brother Dale (Sheri) May, sister Wanda (Gary) Headrick and sister-in-law Wilma May and many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Glenn and Mabel May, son Michael Headrick, grandson Luke Headrick, brother George May, and sister Glenice Schraw Pickering.
