Monte ""Sonny"" Berry Sr.

Monte ""Sonny"" Derwood Berry Sr., 82, of Belton passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 in the comfort of his home. Sonny was born to Lucye and Marvin Berry on April 30, 1937 in a log cabin, still there today in Pace Park, in Salado, Texas. He graduated in the class of 1955 in Salado and attended Baylor University. Sonny enjoyed playing golf at Mill Creek in Salado and in California where he resided for a period of time. He also loved going to the lake to go boating and was a barbeque magician. He opened his own restaurant, Lucye's Place, in his mother's home in Salado. Sonny loved his family. A memorial service for Sonny will be held on Monday, February 17, 2020 at First Baptist Church of Salado at 10:00 A.M. with Pastor Billy Johnson officiating. Burial of his urn will follow at Salado Cemetery. The family invites guests to join them for a fellowship at the church following the services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Sonny is survived by his sons, Donny Berry of Grapevine, Christopher Berry of Belton, Monte ""Sonny"" Berry Jr. of Belton, Houston Berry of San Francisco, Jode Berry of Vacaville, Monte Reissig of Hawaii, and Michael Chang of San Francisco; his daughter, Carisa Newson of Prosper; his sisters, Barbara Sewell of Itasca and Marla Sanders of Blanco; his seventeen grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. Sonny is preceded in death by his grandchild, Hunter Berry; his parents; his brother, Dick Berry; and his sister, JoeAnn Stowell.
