Susan Elmer Pederson, known lovingly to family and friends as Susie, passed away on June 20, 2026, at her home in Belton, Texas. She was born on September 15, 1936, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and lived a life marked by grace, warmth, independence and devotion to the people she loved. Those who knew her will remember her for her friendly spirit, her steady presence, and her ability to sprinkle joy in the ordinary moments of everyday life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Henry Richards “Dick” Elmer Jr., and her second husband, Pete Pederson. She also shared 15 meaningful years with her long-time companion Terry Stout. Susie is survived by her sisters, Lynne “Bing” Ringert and husband Bill of Boise, Idaho; and Karen Witmer of Gainesville, Florida. She is also survived by her daughters, Sheryl Elmer of Jasper, Texas; Shelly Culbertson and husband Dave of Medford, Oregon; and Shannon Douthitt and husband Allen of Taylor, Texas. Her family also includes her beloved grandchildren: Jessica Kemp, Rachel Vickers, Rebecca O’Brien, Hannah Vickers, Danielle Capozzoli, Sierra Cleland, Trey Douthitt, Tyler Douthitt and Taylor Douthitt, along with seven great-grandchildren, who brought her great pride and happiness.

Susie earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin, an accomplishment that reflected her determination and intelligence. All of her life, Susie’s blood truly ran burnt orange, and she proudly and loudly declared her love for all things Longhorn-related.

She used her talents in many ways throughout her life. In addition to raising her family, she owned her own promotional business, worked as a professional tour guide and travel agent, and brought enthusiasm and care to each role she held. Her work reflected her natural ability to connect with people, and she approached every responsibility with energy and professionalism.

Susie was also involved in her community. She volunteered in local newcomers’ clubs, social activity groups, hospital and service programs, always willing to lend her time and talents to help others feel included and supported. Susie deeply loved people and animals, quick to embrace whoever crossed her daily path. Her service was reflected in her generous heart and her belief in the importance of friendship, hospitality and community.

Susie enjoyed a full and active life filled with many interests and pleasures. She loved playing golf for many years as a member of Quail Valley Country Club in Missouri City, Texas; traveling in an RV with Dick across Texas and other states; dancing, painting, playing bridge and canasta with friends; and, above all, reading thousands of books in the course of her lifetime. In her later years, Susie spent her leisure time cruising the Caribbean, New England and Alaska, her favorite destination. Whether she was sharing laughter with friends, enjoying a card game, or setting out on a new journey, she embraced life with enthusiasm and a sense of adventure. Her love of travel and companionship enriched her life and created memories that will be treasured by those who shared those experiences with her.

Above all, Susie will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, companion and friend. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience and kindness that will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her life was a testament to the value of hard work, faith and the simple joys of being present for others.

Though she will be deeply missed, her memory will remain a blessing to those who loved her. A celebration of life will be held Sept. 12, 2026 – to coincide with what would have been Susie’s 90th birthday blowout party – where memories will be shared, tears will be shed and laughter will abound in honor of the woman who lived larger than life and loved others deeply and abundantly.
