Walter Thornton Humphries

December 18, 1944 — February 11, 2021

Walter Thornton Humphries Sr., 76, of Rogers passed away on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at a local hospital. Walter was born to Sarah and Grover Humphries on December 18, 1944 in Temple, Texas. Walter married his wife, Michal Lee Sablich on December 28, 1963 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temple. He worked for Wilson Art, and later owned a trucking company.

To know Walter was to love him. A man’s man, Walter (“Big Dad” to those close to him,) was a hardworking, but gentle, loyal family man whose time was spent with his family and close friends. A motorcycle and racing enthusiast, he was well known for his talent and abilities on a motorcycle. There wasn’t a motorcycle he couldn’t ride, setting records in the process, whether he was hill climbing or drag racing. The only thing he enjoyed more than riding and racing himself was watching his children and grandchildren pursue their passions. He was very humble about his own accomplishments, but would gladly share how proud he was of his family. He leaves behind a great legacy, not only as a motorcycle legend, but as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.

A visitation for Walter will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Crotty Funeral Home in Belton. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at 2:00 PM at 3C Cowboy Fellowship in Salado. Burial will follow at Little Flock Cemetery in Temple.

Walter is survived by his wife of 57 years, Michal "Mike" Sablich Humphries of Rogers; his daughter, Michelle McLean and husband Michael of Rogers; his five grandchildren, Chad McLean of Temple, Cru McLean of Rogers, DeLaney McLean of Rogers, Thorn Humphries of Belton, and Rhyder Humphries of Belton; and his two great grandchildren, Chev McLean and Harley McLean, both of Temple.

Walter is preceded in death by his son, Walter Humphries Jr.; and his parents.

The family would like to thank Logan Ash for taking such tender care of Big Dad in his final days.

Arrangements are entrusted to Crotty Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Belton.
