William “Bill” Nixon Holmes, Jr.
December 28, 1937 – May 11,2026
William Nixon Holmes, Jr. was born on December 28th 1937 in Chicago, Illinois to Dr. William Nixon Holmes Sr. and Ruth Beltz Holmes. He grew up in the Chicago suburb until he attended Texas Tech University. While attending Texas Tech Bill had a scholarship on the Texas Tech swim team, was an officer for Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and operated a student insurance business. He also met and fell in love with Janis Faye Jones of Groesbeck, Texas. He graduated from Texas Tech one day and married the love of his life Janis the next. They married on May 30, 1961, and enjoyed an amazing 65 years of marriage.
Working for Equitable Life took Bill and Janis to Midland where they began their family of four boys: William III, James Truett, John Robert, and David Coleman. Years later purchasing Janis’ family feed and grain milling business brought them to Marlin, Tx. Always being drawn to serve, Bill ran and was elected to the Marlin City Council Mayor and later became a Municipal Judge. Over the years Bill was appointed to many roles, one of his proudest being Chairman of the Small Cities Advisory Committee of the National League of Cities in Washington DC advocating for small cities and speaking on their behalf. Bill loved community service and making the city that his family lived in better for all.
Bill began his Financial Advisory career with Rotan Mosley in Waco. The Holmes family moved to Belton in 1982 when Bill joined A. G. Edwards and Sons in Temple, Texas where he served as branch manager and guided clients for over 20 years. His love of serving continued in Belton on numerous boards and committees within Central Texas, but most notably Belton’s City Council and Mayor. Even in his twilight, service of others remained paramount for Bill and Janis. Together they gave time, effort, and energy through the Texas Baptist Men and aided with disaster relief. Together serving, listening, and loving.
When not serving Bill and Janis loved to travel and see the country via their motor home. They traveled the US and Mexico and loved spending time together, seeing new things, making new friends along the way and always taking time on Sundays for church fellowship wherever they were.
The loudest laughs of joy, family, and friendship came from Bill and Janis’ home with their loving family. Together they wanted to host every event, celebration, and mourn together when necessary. Bill’s door was always open, and he was always excited to show his latest gadget or self-sustaining tool. Bill loved his family.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. William N Holmes, and Ruth Belt Holmes and brother Robert Wendell Holmes.
Bill is survived by his wife, Janis Faye, married 65 years. Sons William Nixon III, Truett (Kelly), John (Beth), David (Kim), 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Funeral service is scheduled for May 18th, 2026 at 10:00am Crotty Funeral Home in Belton.
